Ep 125: Willpower vs Willingness

“I need more willpower” ?

Summary

  • Willpower uses control, restriction or restraint to achieve something.
  • From dieting to stop yelling, we rely on some form of control to stop behaviours we don’t want to continue.
  • Willpower uses a lot of energy and is a limited resource.
  • It perpetuates punishment in ourselves.
  • Willpower can be used as a Plan B.
  • Plan A includes willingness, which feels more open.
  • Using willingness with our emotions involves inviting that emotion and not trying to control it.
  • It’s uncomfortable to shift because it’s new.
  • When we open to the emotion (like anger or urge) we think we’ll loose control but the exact opposite it happens.
