Breaking the cycle is not about only changing a behaviour from the past generation; it’s equally about breaking the emotional patterns.

We unconsciously pass down how we handle emotions to the next generation. We can do this consciously. That’s breaking the cycle.

My mother yells at me (yes, the present tense). I stopped yelling. But I didn’t break my emotional patterns nor stop yelling permanently until I changed how I handled my emotions.

Breaking the cycle is simpler when we understand why we’re doing what we’re doing (or not doing) and the results we’re creating when we understand the emotions that drive the behaviours.
