Ep 165: Focus

The Mental Overload We Create

Summary

  • Mental focus is about where our attention goes even when we’re accomplishing a task.
  • Notice where your attention is: is it on the past? Is it negative?
  • We generate a new emotion by how we’re thinking about something (even a past event). This brings about another layer of emotion on top of the “original” emotion.
  • The top layer of emotion we’re generating, if negative, is carried into the task at hand.
  • Often the exhaustion we experience is mental (emotional) and it’s being generated by this top layer.
  • To get at the top layer try writing out a few thoughts (even if you feel ok) and then throw away the paper.
  • Tackling the top layer, bringing it to awareness, can then help you refocus better at what you’re currently doing. And then help you get it done in the time frame you wanted.
