When You Can’t Feel or Need to Calm Down
Summary
- When we feel overwhelmed or not sure how we feel, think one word: FEET.
- Keep one body part in mind, like feet, to ground you and check in with that body part. What are your feet doing now?
- If feet is not an option use ELBOW or FACE. Where is your elbow at, doing? How does your face feel? Notice how you become more aware of your body.
- Your feet will ground you and through this stabilisation technique you can check in with your body (mind-body connection).
- From this more stable place you can take in a few breaths to register any other sensation in your body (to release whatever emotion you’re feeling).
- Remembering one word (FEET) is helpful if you’re yelling or don’t even know how you feel (i.e. overwhelm, out of sorts).
