Ep 154: The Anger Push

How Anger Impacts Your Relationships

Summary

  • Anger is the emotion that will change your relationships.
  • Getting a hold of anger means understanding why its there and making a decision about it from a calmer emotion
  • The Anger Push refers to a concept in Harriet Lerner describes in her book, The Dance of Anger.
  • Relationships develop a status quo, a way of handling big emotions, like anger.
  • Usually, one person ‘handles’ or takes on the anger for the relationship.
  • When that person changes how they deal with anger (by shifting behaviours that come from anger like yelling or name calling) the other person will try to revert the back to the status quo.
  • The other person will ‘push’ the other person to take on that anger in their usual way (like yelling) by baiting them.
    • I refer to my relationship with my husband in episode as an example.
  • When we make changes in how we handle anger, other people will make shifts in their behaviours, thus impacting the overall relationships.
  • It takes one person and one emotion to change a relationship. That’s all that’s needed.
