Ep 148: Action Swapping

Pitfalls of Redirecting Children and Yourself

Summary

  • Action swapping is the adult form of the parenting advice of redirecting.
  • Action swapping is switching out one action that you want to stop for another. (Yelling to practice self-care or substitute one diet for another).
  • Behavioural problems are emotional problems.
  • Redirection (gentle parenting) is giving a child another action to stop the unwanted action.
  • When it comes to safety with a child, there’s a hard limit and where redirection isn’t needed.
  • Other behaviours (hitting, screaming, kicking) we use redirection to show them an alternative behaviour.
  • Through redirection, we never deal with the root cause of the hitting; what is causing the hitting.
  • We try as parents to manage behaviours instead of looking at the emotions.
