How to Learn Emotional Regulation
Summary
- Emotional regulations does not require emotional intelligence in the beginning.
- Drop the need to exactly label the emotion in the beginning.
- The simplest way to understand your emotions is to look at your actions.
- If we later regret an action, it’s probably due to our lack of regulating our emotions.
- Knowing your action came from some emotion is the first step. Start with the action, the awareness of the action.
- Our actions (the ones we don’t want to do) will tell us that we’re reacting or resisting or avoiding an emotion.
- Emotional regulation = ability to feel all your emotions.
- Step two is to process the emotion when you’re aware of the action you don’t want to be taking.
- Step three: more awareness will come up of your emotions as you catch yourself in the action and feel the emotion you’re avoiding/resisting/reacting to.
- Practicing emotional regulation yourself will teach and guide others on how to regulate it.
