How to Respond when Someone is Angry
Summary
- I’ll give you four things to do when dealing with someone who is angry.
- 1. Allow the other person’s anger even when you don’t agree it.
- 2. Give the person the space to be angry. Often it involves not saying anything and being present with them.
- 3. Agree with their anger because we initially don’t agree (as in step #1). (This is more for relationships.)
- Agreement means you can see how their thinking (or survival mechanism) is creating their emotion. This is practicing empathy.
- 4. Addressing their anger isn’t urgent or immediate. Wait for the calm space, down time to have a calmer discussion.
