How to Get and Keep Motivated
Summary
- To make a permanent change, understand these three core principles of the emotion, motivation.
- 1. Do you want to change this behaviour? Check in to see it’s something you want to change and not coming from someone’s request or society expectations.
- When it’s something you want to change, motivation can be cultivated without unnecessary resistance.
- 2. In the moment we need to take action, motivation won’t be there.
- We don’t feel motivated in that instant because our brain will choose the status quo of sitting on the sofa for our immediate survival.
- Anticipating the absence of motivation will be a relief.
- 3. Motivation at 100% is not needed, only 2% motivation is needed.
- We tend to think of complex emotions (gratitude, determination) in its fullness. In the moment, you only need a little bit of feeling better than what you’re feeling.
- Motivation will meet you half way and sometimes at the end of doing something.
- Tip: Break down tasks into smaller steps.
