Summary

  • Breathing exercises can be valuable but common advice misses the point of their purpose and why it’s necessary.
  • There needs to be a result of the exercise: process the emotion to have it move our of your body.
  • The exercise involves full and intentional breath.
  • With each breath, on the exhale you check in with your body (Body Scan).
  • The body scan with intentional breaths lasts between one and two minutes. (30 minutes of yoga is not needed).
  • Once you feel movement of the identified sensation in your body you can go about your day.
  • Continuously acknowledging and honouring the emotion as it exits your body allows you to process it as you do other things.
